EUBS ExCom Elections 2024

According to the EUBS Constitution and Bylaws, it is time to hold our annual elections for the Executive Committee. All regular EUBS members will receive an “Invitation to Vote” by e-mail; voting must be done before September 12th  (before the EUBS Annual General Meeting).

We will this year elect a new Member-at-Large, to serve on the Executive Committee for a period of four years. You will find the picture and a short description of each candidate below.

EUBS Elections for Member at Large 2024 candidates (in alphabetical order):

Pedro BARATA

Dr Pedro Barata Coelho, MD, PhD, is a Medical Doctor working in Clinical Pathology at Centro Hospitalar Universitário de Santo António – Porto, Portugal and at the Hyperbaric Unit of the ULS Matosinhos, focusing on clinical research. 
He completed his Medical Degree at Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto. He also holds a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Faculdade de Farmácia da Universidade do Porto, where he completed his MSc and PharmD. Additionally, he completed the Global Clinical Scholars Research Training program at Harvard Medical School and obtained an MBA from the Portuguese Catholic University. He also has a postgraduate degree in healthcare management. Currently, he is an Associate Professor at Faculdade de Ciências da Saúde da Universidade Fernando Pessoa in Porto, Portugal, and a senior lecturer at various institutions, including Kings College London, Universidade de Coimbra, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, and Universidade do Porto. He is a member of the Medicines Evaluation Commission of Infarmed, the Portuguese regulatory authority, and a quality expert for the European Medicines Agency.
He conducts his research at I3S-UP, a prominent Portuguese research centre, focusing on the clinical effects of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapies, Mitochondria, and Gut Microbiome. He has published numerous papers and received scientific awards, including winning the Zetterstrom Award twice with the ULS Matosinhos team. He is a member of the team that received EUBS research grant 2024 and supervised several PhD students and Master theses.
He was a member of the organizing and scientific committee for EUBS 2023, which was held last year in Porto – Portugal.

Michaela IGNATESCU

Dr Ignatescu has been working in the Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine field for the last 24 years and has extensive experience in both recreational and commercial diving. She has worked at various hyperbaric chambers in the world namely Egypt, UK, Malta, Italy and has provided training for doctors and hyperbaric staff in Mexico, Thailand and many other countries.

She has completed a postgraduate degree in Underwater Medicine at the University of Stellenbosch in 2007 and is holding an ECHM Consultancy in Hyperbaric Medicine and is on the specialist register for Baromedicine in Malta. She is currently one of the advisors for International SOS providing on-call telephone cover for emergencies in the offshore oil and gas industry, both diving and non-diving related.
Dr Ignatescu is a HSE approved Medical Examiner of Divers and a UKSDMC referee. She is a long-time member of the European Underwater and Baromedical Society (EUBS).

Anders KJELLBERG

Dr Anders Kjellberg, MD, PhD is an ICU Consultant, Head of the Hyperbaric unit, Perioperative Medicine and Intensive Care, at the Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm.

He has been a diving physician with the Swedish Armed Forces from 2002 to 2010 (part-time), and after his training as ICU Specialist, obtained his PhD at the Dept Physiology and Pharmacology, of the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, in 2024.

His main area of interest is to find a suitable biomarker for individual HBOT dose-response with the overall aim to individualise treatment for better efficacy and safety. He performs clinical trials with HBOT
compliant with ICH-GCP which is the international standard for pharmaceutical drugs. All trials include exploratory sub studies on mechanisms and biomarkers. His dissertation in February 2024 was on clinical trials with HBOT for COVID-19 and Long COVID. In his preclinical research he currently explores adjuvant HBOT in ovarian tissue transplantation and IVF treatment, hoping to launch a
clinical trial later this year. He is part of the steering committee for the planned international multicentre randomised trial on HBOT for NSTI led by Professor Hyldegaard in Copenhagen.
